Rabbit Suspension
Usagizuri (兎吊り)
The usagizuri is a very comfortable suspension that allows a plentitude of upper-body (johanshin, 上半身) transitions.
The Crucifixion of a Rabbit
One-rope Tengu
一本縄 天狗
The tengu (天狗) are often depicted as birdlike creatures. They are known as shapeshifters and strong martial artists. A number of centuries-old sword school founders claim to have been trained and taught by the tengu.
The tengu shibari tie is restraining the arms individually with the palms exposed outward in the ultimate form of surrender. For a samurai to be tied in this position is extremely humiliating.
There is more than one way to accomplish a tengu tie. In this workshop a one-rope version is taught -- with a second rope thrown in for good measure, and added pleasure.
One-rope Teppo
一本縄 鉄砲
When the Portuguese arrived in Japan in the 16th century they would soon introduce firearms aka teppo / 鉄砲. It is those rifles slung over the shoulders of soldiers that first inspired the teppo shibari / 鉄砲縛り and later the teppozuri / 鉄砲吊り aka rifle suspension. This suspension has been made popular by the late shibari grandmaster Akechi Denki / 明智伝鬼.
In this workshop, we discover the intricacies of the one-rope teppo. The trick is to properly lock the shoulder of the upward-facing arm and place the elbow behind the head. A strict application of the rope with no room for slack will then fully immobilize the ukete-san (受け手さん) and prevent the upper arm from moving forward or sideways.
If you wish to learn about the suspension version of the teppo you can find it in this workshop https://www.shibari-dojo.com/p/teppo-suspension and also as part of the Osada-ryu curriculum here https://www.shibari-dojo.com/p/fourth-kyu-b.
Shukke Shibari
出家縛り
The shukke shibari is a temple tie. More specifically it is a tie meant to enforce eviction from the temple grounds by tying the hands in the reverse direction of prayer (with the fingers facing down).
This tie can be accomplished in a plentitude of ways. In hojojutsu and samurai days it involved rope around the throat, giving the "evicted" a choice of whether to struggle or choke themselves.
In this workshop we decide on a more "humane" version.
